Installing and configuring CertainFree certificates:
Questions about certificates, PKI and digital dignatures:
Q: What happens in the '10 Second Upgrade'?
A: All CertainFree certificates provided by CertainKey, for personal use
and for websites, are signed by a master certificate. This proves that the
information you provided on the sign-up has been checked by CertainKey.
During the '10 Second Upgrade' the master certificate is downloaded to
your computer. That way, your computer can make sure when people send
you digitall signed e-mail or you visit an encrypted website that those
certificates are legitimate and authentic.
Q: Will I need to do the '10 Second Upgrade' before using a personal
certificate?
A: The upgrade happens automatically when you pickup your
certificate. So, you do need to do the upgrade but don't have to worry
about it.
Q: Can I send an encrypted message to anyone if I have a personal
certificate?
A: You can send a signed message to anyone but they can only
verify that your signature is authentic if they have a copy of the
master certificate. That means they have to have completed the '10
Second Upgrade'.
Q: Do I need to do the '10 Second Upgrade' on all my computers?
A: If you receive signed e-mail and visit encrypted (SSL) websites
then you should definitely do the '10 Second Update'. After all, it
only takes 10 seconds and that's if you take your time!
